BIRDS ON THE WHITESTONE - NEW ZEALAND [7150 NZ] This was a fly fishing trip so we were off the beaten track most of the time. Sometimes just getting to the river is a challenge. You have to be careful not to step on the nests scattered throughout the area.THE OBLIGATORY - WHITESTONE [7122 NZ] This is Larry posing for the 'obligatory' shot of the fly fisherman with his rainbow trout before he releases it back into the water. I have a few thousand of these offline. It's Larry's 6th year fly fishing on the South Island. He's a viticulturist from Napa Valley, California, who fishes in New Zealand because it's springtime here during the months when he can take off (in Nov/Dec after harvest). Actually, Tim, an advertising exec from Australia who was on his 10th season fishing in NZ, and Larry caught several.THE WHITESTONE [7138 NZ]THE WHITESTONE [7134 NZ]THE OHAU [7102 NZ] Is that a halo around Larry's head as he takes a break to enjoy the view?LAKE VON [7094 NZ] In Te Anau, when the weather is bad and you can't fish the Oreti, Lake Von is the next choice. It's a 45 min. hike from the road unless you have a key for the gate like this guy did. He's a Kiwi who also brought along his family. You can't see them because they're sitting in the car thinking 'why did dad bring us here?'LAKE VON [7095 NZ]THE NEVIS FISHING HUTS [7174 NZ]THE NEVIS [7164 NZ] Barely visible here beyond the rocks is the Nevis, a remote river that takes over an hour drive on a dirt road and over 15 river crossings to reach. We didn't see one person all day. It is one of the few rivers that isn't didymo affected. Didymo is a freshwater algae first discovered in South New Zealand rivers in Oct. 2004. It is most readily spread on contaminated gear used by river users such as fishermen and kayakers. Its origin is northern US and Europe. The main difference between didymo and native species is the way it feels. Native algae feels slimy and will break apart in your fingers, whereas didymo is strong and feels like wet cotton wool. Didymo is an unwanted organism under the Biosecurity Act 1993. It is an offense to knowingly spread an unwanted organism with penalites of up to 5 years imprisonment, and/or a fine of up to $100,000.
