These guys will ride anyone willing to pay up to Base Camp.ONE OF EIGHT WIVES - TANZANIA [2510 TZ] Her husband was asleep under a tree while we visited with her and the other women and children at the camp. The eight wives all wore animal skin which, quite frankly, didn't smell very good!TANZANIA [2514 TZ]EYES - TANZANIA [2512 TZ]TANZANIA [2513 TZ]TANZANIA [2517 TZ] He was part of a nomadic tribe. The living conditions were harsh, since they moved frequently. He was standing there looking at me with that devilish grin, waiting for me to take his picture.MAASAI ADUMU DANCE - TANZANIA [2137 TZ] The moran (warriors) live as one of brothers. No one is allowed to drift away and eat or sleep alone. The bouncing adumu dance often forms a competition among the moran eager to display their strength, courage and endurance in a process that will ultimately determine their status in the manyatta and later as junior elders.MAASAI WOMAN - TANZANIA [2136 TZ] Childhood places more responsibility on girls than boys. From about the age of 5, they look after the calves, sheep and goats. At 13, she goes through the traditional rite of female circumcision. No one knows the origin of the practice nor sees any practical purpose in it. It is just the custom. After circumcision, a Maasai woman is allowed to marry. This is arranged by the girl’s parents, the clan members, and sometimes the entire location. She can reject the suitor but will have to get her father’s approval. Once the marriage has been decided, the groom donates a heifer to the girl’s father, a ewe to her mother, and a bull, cow and calf, as an assurance that the couple will produce children and so increase the family wealth.MAASAI BOYS - TANZANIA [2132 TZ] In infancy, he is in a “state of grace.” As soon as he can toddle, he is sent out with the calves. From 13 to 17, his boyhood, ayiokisho, is ended abruptly in a painful circumcision ritual at which he stays silent and brave while his parents scream for him in simulated agony. After that, he becomes a warrior-recruit, proving his courage and endurance in long expeditions with his age-mates. Eventually a company of these boys is allowed to set up a manyatta as junior warriors and are free to spend two or three years doing anything or nothing as they please until serious responsibilities arrive after the graduation to senior warriors, at the eunoto.SMILE! - TANZANIA [2130 TZ] I know it doesn't look like it but I did have permission to take photos.
