CAPPADOCIA, TURKEY [1063 TU] Goreme was called Macan in antiquity and is one of the oldest sites in this region, 6th to 7th century. The invading Persians coming from the east and the Arabs from the south devastated the region starting in the 7th century. The local population of the times built underground cities of the volcanic rocks which are now called "the eighth wonder of the world," and sought refuge in them.
