LA PAZ, BOLIVIA [1031 BO] Two weeks after taking this photograph, I stood on top of 21,201 foot Illimani, the mountain in the distance. The acclimatization process starts when you fly into La Paz, the highest capital of the world at 12,000 feet.

VALLE DE LA LUNA - BOLIVIA [1033 BO] Valley of the Moon, just outside La Paz (I took a taxi), isn't actually a valley. It is a badlands of hills and rock eroded into fantastic shapes and deep gulleys.

BODHNATH STUPA - KATHMANDU, NEPAL [0228EVE072] The base of the stupa symbolizes the earth. The dome symbolizes water. On top of this is the spire that symbolizes fire, then the umbrella that symbolizes air. On top is the pinnacle which symbolizes either. The spire has 13 levels, which represent the 13 stages to attain nirvana. On all four sides of the square base of the spire are the watchful eyes of the Buddha. There is a third eye between and above the normal two eyes. The nose is really the Nepali number one, which signifies the unity of life.

NAMCHE BAZAAR - NEPAL 1999 [1230 NE] We stayed here for two nights on our way to Kala Pattar and Everest Base Camp in 1999. At 11,286 feet (3,440m), Namche is the main trading center for the Khumbu region.

KRASNAYA PLOSHCHAD (Красная площадь) - RED SQUARE - MOSCOW, RUSSIA [1050 RU] Red Square separates the Kremlin, the former royal citadel and currently the official residence of the President of Russia, from a historic merchant quarter, known as Kitay-gorod. The land that Red Square is situated on was originally covered with wooden buildings, but cleared by Ivan III's edict in 1493. The newly-opened area (originally known simply as the Pozhar, or "burnt-out place") gradually came to serve as Moscow's primary marketplace. Later, it was also used for various public ceremonies and proclamations, and occasionally as the site of coronation for Russia's tsars. The Russian word красная (krasnaya) can mean either "red" or "beautiful" but the "red" translation persevered.

THE ONION DOMES OF ST. BASIL'S CATHEDRAL - MOSCOW, RUSSIA [1071 RU] I know, I know, I cut off the top - same with the next photo. Those tops just seem to go on forever. St. Basil's Cathedral was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible and built on the edge of Red Square between 1555 and 1561. it is a beautiful array of swirling colors and redbrick towers. Its design includes nine individual chapels, each topped with a unique onion dome and each commemorating a victorious assault on the city of Kazan.

THE SMOLNY CATHEDRAL - ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA [1051 RU] Smolny Cathedral is one of many architectural masterpieces of the Italian architect Rastrelli, who also created the Winter Palace. It was originally intended to be the central church of a monastery, built to house the daughter of Peter the Great, Elizabeth, who decided to become a nun since she was not allowed to take the throne. However, she eventually did accept the throne, and abandoned being a nun, when her predecessor was overthrown during a coup.
