The invading Persians coming from the east and the Arabs from the south devastated the region starting in the 7th century. The local population of the times built underground cities of the volcanic rocks which are now called "the eighth wonder of the world," and sought refuge in them.

LILLEHAMMER, NORWAY [1025 NO] Lillehammer, the gateway to Gudbrandsdalen, is a town and municipality in the county of Oppland, Norway. The Olympic Games in Lillehammer were held in 1994, the only time that two Games have been staged two years apart. This was to accomodate the decision of the IOC in 1986 to change the schedule of the Olympic Games so that the Summer and Winter Games would be held in different years.

VIGELAND MUSEUM - OSLO. NORWAY [1020 NO] Gustav Vigeland was born in 1869 in the south-coast town of Mandal in Norway. The Sculpture Park in Oslo contains 192 sculptures with more than 600 figures, all modeled in full size by Vigeland without the assistance of pupils or other artists. Vigeland also designed the architectural setting and the layout of the grounds. He died in 1943.

KRONBORG CASTLE - DENMARK [1010 DE] Located on a strategically important site commanding the Sund, the stretch of water between Denmark and Sweden, the Royal castle of Kronborg at Helsingør (Elsinore) is of immense symbolic value to the Danish people and played a key role in the history of northern Europe in the 16th-18th centuries. Work began on the construction of this outstanding Renaissance castle in 1574, and its defenses were reinforced according to the canons of the period's military architecture in the late 17th century. It has remained intact to the present day. It is world-renowned as Elsinore, the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

GAMLA STAN WINDOWS - STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN [6010 SW] Gamla Stan, founded in the 13th century, means Old Town in Swedish. These windows are on the buildings in Stortorget (Big Square), Stockholm's oldest center and site of the 1520 execution of several political opponents. This area is full of tourists but worth the visit.
